Pioneering role in aerospace
thyssenkrupp Materials Services is continuing its digitalization offensive with the introduction of a flexible IT infrastructure for smart, agile management of all processes along the supply chain. Material deliveries, customer purchase orders, order execution, transportation logistics – the digital accelerator Desca can process and forward millions of datasets in seconds. And it’s customers who benefit the most: With Desca, Materials Services is shortening order lead times, optimizing warehousing logistics and paving the way for new supply chain services. So the system truly lives up to its name: Desca stands for Digital Extended Supply Chain Accelerator. Driver of “Materials as a Service” strategy Desca is an important element of thyssenkrupp Materials Services’ strategy. Under its “Materials as a Service” approach the western world’s biggest materials distributor guarantees its customers access to global supply markets combined with...

The new generation weather and flight optimizer tool
Avtech proFlight is an easy-to-use iPad app that visualizes flight related weather information like turbulence, winds, temperature, ice and more, all tailored to a single flight’s trajectory and time. Now all pilots can try out the app free of charge for a limited time on AppStore. Niklaes Persson, Head of R&D at Avtech and a commercial airline pilot himself, explains that the proFlight app gives pilots a graphical view of the exact location of the aircraft and the surrounding weather, including invisible turbulence. “To download the flight plan to proFlight, a pilot that is registered in our system only needs to choose the flight number from a list in the app, which then automatically downloads all the needed data for that flight”, Persson says. “But it is much more than just another weather app. Having unique access to Met Office’s 10 km resolution weather data, which our backend servers extract individually for every flight...

Know the weather better, fly cheaper: Airlines can easily save both money and the environment
Swedish IT company has developed a very precise weather and wind data product portfolio to help aircrafts fly as economically and comfortably as possible – without the airlines having to invest in any new equipment. In a recent real-life test, Norwegian Air Shuttle reduced CO2-emissions by 2 000 tons in three months’ time last autumn, by using Avtech’s services in the company’s fleet of 106 Boeing 737-800 aircrafts. “We saved from one to eighty kilograms of fuel per flight, the average being 22 kilos, purely by optimizing the descent phase of the flights”, says Norwegian pilot and project manager Stig Patey. “The 10K weather grid makes it possible to avoid unfavourable winds at given altitudes during the flight and to start the descent phase at exactly the right moment. Our pilots have reportedly been very pleased with the easy to use service that in real life proved to be much more accurate than the standard weather systems.” All of...

Now, where was the turbulence?
A good flight is the one that is on time and has not been whipped around by turbulence. Here Swedish AVTech comes into the picture with its advanced technology to predict invisible turbulence and bad weather. It’s the only weather service on the market based on the high definition weather data from UK’s Met Office. “Our Sigma service goes beyond normal weather reports, since it’s the only service that has access to UK’s Met Office’s high definition weather data”, says Niklaes Persson, Business Unit Director, R&D. “Combined with our patented algorithms, Sigma can predict weather hazards with an accuracy of only 10 km, individually for any flight. Normally the pilots have access to a global weather grid that covers a very coarse area of 140 km.” The information from the Sigma service is supplementary to the normal weather sources approved by the authorities; SWC and Sigmets. “The source is the same, but the information is more in detail...
