A major destination for California oranges, China abruptly closed its doors to the state's citrus over a year ago citing incidences of decayed fruit on arrival. The USDA's Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has been working with its Chinese counterparts to come up with a protocol that would address the alleged problems. The new protocol involves trimming of tree "skirts" sufficiently above the orchard floor as well as a regimen of spraying to minimise the incidence of phytopthora syringae, commonly known as "brown rot" in oranges. Once in place, the programme will run for two years with an efficacy review between the end of the 2014/15 season and before the start of the following campaign. Local food exporters are making waves abroad following the country’s successful participation in two food fairs and exhibitions in Singapore and Japan. The two events yielded on-the-spot and negotiated orders for Philippine firms, according to Export Marketing Bureau (EMB) director Senen M. Perlada. In a phone interview, Perlada explained that the sector’s prospects continued to be good for this year, as statistics showed double-digit growths in export receipts for processed food, fresh fruits and beverages in the first quarter. After a brief dip, kiwifruit prices are on the upswing again and should stay high through the summer. Importers have known for some time that the Chilean kiwifruit crop would be 60-70% lighter than last year, thanks to severe September freezes, said Chris Kragie, deciduous fruit manager for Madera, Calif.-based Western Fresh Marketing. Less predictable was the fact that the Chilean deal was going to be “front-loaded,” Kragie said, with unexpectedly large volumes coming in early in the season. “Prices dipped by two or three dollars” a box as a result, Kragie said. Grapefruit imports from South Africa are still light, but importers and officials are seeing growth. The star ruby grapefruit deal is still relatively new, but it is growing, said Marc Solomon, senior vice president for St. Laurent, Quebec-based Capespan North America. “First arrivals will be in July, and they will continue for July and August,” Solomon said. U.S. sales of South African grapefruit are expected to double over last season, but, at 24,000 cartons, the deal is still relatively small, said Tom Cowan, South African citrus manager for DNE World Fruit Sales, Fort Pierce, Fla. Suhanra Conradie, CEO of the Western Cape Citrus Producers Forum, also expects more of the star ruby variety to find their way to the U.S. this season. “Star ruby is an excellent fruit,” she said. “It’s in demand from South Africa, and the plan is to increase volumes shipped in 2014”.
